20 Best running shoes for Plantar Fasciitis

Are you one of the people who is suffering from Plantar Fasciitis but still want to run or train? It is important to choose the right running shoe before you make an attempt to start running. There are many different characteristics within different brands of shoes. Here I will list the 20 best running shoes for Plantar Fasciitis in 2017. You will find there are many shoes that will offer the same support just different brand or color. However, there are shoes that are designed for specific foot conditions such as over and under pronation.

runner

Runners are more prone to acquiring Plantar Fasciitis because of the impact that is put on their feet. The best running shoe for Plantar Fasciitis should have extra support around the Fascia and heel area, any other shoe will not help your Fascia heal. Wearing the wrong shoe could cause more damage to your Plantar Fasciitis and make it almost impossible to cure as long as you continue wearing the shoe.

What to consider before purchasing a running shoe for Plantar Fasciitis

shoe diagram

There are many different features within running shoes to consider before you purchase any. The first thing the analyze is which type of foot condition you have, most overpronators have Plantar Fasciitis. Also, consider the terrain you will be running on, make sure you are not able to slip and loose traction during your runs. Here is a list of things that could affect your stride or Plantar Fasciitis while running:

Before you start your day purchasing new shoes, WAIT!

As you progress throughout the day your Fascia stretches. This causes your entire foot to increase in size, therefore the best time to purchase shoes is in the mid-day when your foot is at it’s most extended stretch.

picking out shoes

When you first try on a new pair of shoes inside a store it should already fit perfectly and comfortably. Avoid the salesman pitch, ” The shoe just needs a little time to be broken in”. The proper shoe for your feet should fit comfortably the instant you put them on. If a brand of shoe does not feel comfortable no matter what size you try, then that brand is not for your foot’s pronation.

You should also have adequate room in the toe-box area. You should not have to wait for the material of the shoe to stretch to accommodate the length of your toes. Wearing a shoe like this will affect your foot strike when running and cause damage to your toes.

toe box too small

In general no matter which foot pronation or condition you have, the ideal shoe for plantar Fasciitis should have great heel support. The shoe should also have extra cushioning around the Fascia or midsole area. You should not be able to bend the shoe from the midsole to heel.

If you have Overpronation

pronation

Overpronation is discovered by viewing the inside edges of your shoe. If you notice that your foot rolls 15% inward by the time your heel reaches the ground, you have overpronation. Most runners who have Plantar Fasciitis have overpronation. Wearing motion controlled shoes will help with this condition.

If you have Underpronation (Supination)

supination

Under pronation is sometimes called supination. Underpronation is recognized by viewing the outer edges of your running shoe. If your foot rolls more than 15% outward by the time your heels reach the ground during a run, you have under pronation. Supination can cause serious injuries to runners because the impact of their heel strike is not being reduced.

Analyze the Heel Counter of the shoe

heel counter

The Heel Counter is the extra cushion on the back of the shoe. It helps to support the heel and adds extra value by adding support to the calve muscles which also helps people to cure Achilles Tendonitis. When you reduce stress to the Achilles Tendon you are also relieving stress to the Fascia as well. These to ligaments are both connected to the same heel bone (calcaneus).

Examine the Toe to Heel drop of the shoe

heel to toe drop

The Heel Drop of a shoe is the difference in height between the heel of the shoe and the toe of the shoe. Every shoe has a different curvature and this difference in height effects how your foot strikes the ground during your running stride.

foot strikes

A low heel drop will give the runner a mid-foot strike once they began running. This is an ideal shoe for runners with Plantar Fasciitis since you do not want to stretch the Fascia too much while running. A mid-foot strike will keep the extra pressure off the Fascia, while still allowing the runner to run at their full potential. A low heel to toe drop is measured from the toebox area to the heel, if it lifts more than 8mm it is considered a low heel drop.

Anything above 8mm is considered a high heel to toe drop. This kind of shoe promotes heel striking and can be dangerous for anyone suffering from Plantar Fasciitis. If Your running shoe is over 8mm be sure to wear them only when running. Wearing them for long hours will become dangerous for the Fascia, however, when running you want to keep minimum stress off the Achilles Tendon to prevent further injuries. Avoid shoes that you are able to bend from mid-sole to the heel. Having a high heel-to-toe drop can make your Plantar Fasciitis almost impossible to cure.

Medial Post and Torison Bar

medial post

The medial post and torison bar are located on the sides of a shoe. This helps people with overpronation and under pronation (supination). Shoes with a firmer medial post on the inner sides of the shoe will help support runners with overpronation. If a runner with overpronation wore a shoe with a medial post or torison bar on the inner sides of the shoe, the shoe would appear as if the runner has a normal pronation.

Medial Post or torison bars located on the outer edges of the shoe are for runners who have under pronation. An under pronator wearing shoes with torsion bars will also resemble a shoe with normal pronation.

It is important to consider these things before purchasing a shoe for Plantar Fasciitis. For a long lasting running Plantar Fasciitis shoe, look for two of the most common durable materials. The two types of materials are nylon and nylon mesh, these two materials maintain the shoe durability while still allowing the shoe to breathe.

Remembering all of these characteristics before purchasing a shoe, will ensure that you have the proper support you need to help you cure your Plantar Fasciitis successfully, while you remain running and training. Here is a list of the 20 best running shoes for Plantar Fasciitis:
